5 SIMPLE STYLING HACKS THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR ABODE - HACK #2 SIMPLE RULE OF THREE'S AND OTHER RULES YOU GOTTA KNOW.

Hack # 1. One of the most basic rules in styling from Styling the New West is the simple rule of three’s. This hack will train you to edit which is probably the hardest thing for clients to do. Let’s start with paint color and use the 60-30-10. First select a darker neutral to use 60 percent (walls), your second lighter neutral is 30 percent (trim) and your accent color is 10 percent of the room. (backsplash or entry) While some designers will use up to 7-8 fabrics, they will stay in a 3 color palette to give the room a cohesive feel.

What about textures? Try three varying textures with your furniture, pillows and window treatments. Other three’s such as furniture filling no more than 2/3’s of the space, coffee table 2/3’s the size of the sofa and presenting 3 pieces of furniture together in clusters will give you some real curb appeal. When adding in details with things you love or collect, present in three’s with different heights but similar color. See photo below to get the concept darling……… You are going to go nuts with the three’s…..

REPETITION AND OTHER RULES OF THUMB . I.E. DESIGN BASICS….

Repetition is another simple but useful hack you will want to use and don’t worry if you think you are overusing it. You probably aren’t. One of the interior designer’s in Jackson Hole that I follow, Jacque Stireman-Jenkins @jacquestiremandesign used this simple tool in an entryway she created. One bench with two repeating fabrics. Voila. Simple, useful. You can try this too.

Here is a short checklist you can use when looking for things to repeat: two matching lamps on the same table, books, wood bowl or trays being careful not to bring too many different looks in with the items.

EDITING, NOT A DESIGN PRINCIPLE BUT A HACK I USUALLY START WITH.

Another designer I work with, Elise Chambers of @snakeriverinteriors rocks this basic hack. She actually begins with editing! Her simple style is one that doesn’t over clutter the home. I had a client last year that asked me to restyle her home. While she was very resistive to editing, I treated it like she was moving. We moved everything out of the room into another room and just pulled like I was styling the room from the beginning. We used about 1/3 of the items and it looked brand new. Let a new fresh set of eyes in on your home and let go of all those books that you are lugging around. Put them in the attic darling and get editing. You’ll fall in love with the items you do love and they will have more presence if you do this. Ok start rocking these hacks it will give you a GREAT place to begin.

I’d love to help you style… email me if you have any questions jillking@stylingthenewwest.com
